South African Government: Fight Climate Change, Create Jobs, Protect the future!

South African Government
The Million Climate Jobs Campaign asks you to support its call for the creation of a million climate jobs.
We are facing a global environmental and economic crisis. We need solutions to both now.
Millions of people across the world are already suffering the consequences of climate change through floods, droughts, and other extreme weather events. Unemployment in South Africa is creating a social crisis which is destroying our communities.
URGENT MEAUSURES ARE NEEDED TO TACKLE THESE CRISES. MEASURES THAT CAN TACKLE CLIMATE CHANGE CAN ALSO CREATE A LARGE NUMBER OF NEW JOBS AT A TIME WHEN MILLIONS OF SOUTH AFRICAN ARE UNEMPLOYED.
I THEREFORE SUPPORT THE CALL FOR OUR GOVERNMENT TO:
• Treat Climate Change as a national emergency
• Stop the increasing use of coal because it is the major cause of climate change
• Make Renewable Energy South Africa’s major energy source
• Reject fracking and nuclear as alternate energy sources
• Create at least 1 million climate jobs – decent jobs created by a large number of different public measures such as:
o Producing our electricity from wind and solar power
o Retrofitting of all houses and public buildings with solar water heaters and other energy saving steps, including rainwater harvesting;
o An integrated, reliable, safe and affordable public transport system that greatly reduces the number of private cars and heavy lorries and trucks on the roads, by massively expanding the railways and buses
o Supporting a substantial number of small farms who adopt agro-ecology as an approach to farming and produce for local markets;
o A considerable reduction in packaging and other forms of avoidable waste, together with a large increase in coordinated recycling.
In signing this petition, we give notice to our government that we will be watching them, closely and critically. Tackling climate change by creating 1 million climate jobs will help safeguard the future for human kind while giving hope and dignity to the millions who are unemployed
