Stop the slaughter of Calderon dolphins by teens on Feroe Island, Denmark
(PLEASE SHARE) The sea is stained in red and it is not because of climate change or the effects of nature. We come to a situation of instilled tradition versus global consciousness. One concern lies with the killing hundreds of the beautiful and intelligent Calderon dolphin (Globicephala melaen). This happens every year on the Feroe Isands of Denmark. In this slaughter the main participants are young teens. WHY? A celebration, to show that they are adults and mature! Is it necessary to mention that the Calderon Dolphin, like all the other species of dolphin, is near extinction? Is it necessary to mention that they get near people to play and interact with intentions of PURE friendship? They suffer numerous painful cuts from hooks before they bleed to death in waters stained bright red with massive amounts of blood. While they die they produce a loud cry similar to that of a newborn human child. The teens are torn between following in their forefathers foot steps and numbing the compassion in their hearts. The world is saddened and outraged both in what is being done to this beautiful animal and in what is forcibly instilled in this island nations leaders of tomorrow. Because the elders did this tradition is no reason to expose the youth to it now that the abundance of options for survival have no doubt expanded, educational levels have been established to where we know the devastating effects of such actions or where the international community is willing to help expand the options for this otherwise peaceful nation. We understand the island has experienced considerable economic difficulties following the collapse of the fishing industry in the early 1990s, but have since made efforts to diversify the economy. It is always easiest to expand into realms where there is limited friction. I feel in this situation, a solution for everyone, lies in an area where no one or nothing is injured, after all the less stress in a foundation the larger a structure can be stably built upon it. I should also note the meat of these animals is toxic to eat due to high mercury levels and causes neurological damage. In the Red List of Threatened Species, the International Union for Conservation of Nature lists both the Long-finned and Short-finned Pilot Whales (actually Dolphins known as Calderon Dolphins to many activists despite the name much as the Orca or Killer Whale is really a dolphin) with “Data Deficient” status, according to its 2008 assessment. They used to be common on the West Coast of the United States though have not been seen in years. This indicates a decreasing population and or endangered status.
