Suzanne Finlay, Head teacher at Dean Trust Ardwick
Suzanne Finlay&colon Use your discretion&excl Ensure the Ali&dashImam children don’t lose their school places at Dean Trust Ardwick. The family absolutely needed to spend a few weeks attending memorial events for their late father.

Head teachers should use their discretion in exceptional circumstances, to grant authorized absence

  • The Ali‐Imam children lost their wonderful father at the end of last year after a three year battle with cancer
  • Most of their family live abroad
  • The family’s GP has said that the memorial trip to Pakistan is essential for the family’s well&dashbeing to enable them to receive support and comfort from immediate family
  • However, Suzanne Finlay, Head teacher at Dean Trust Ardwick, has indicated that by taking this trip, the children will lose their school places
  • The impact of this decision has made the already stressful circumstances unimaginably worse for the family, compounding their distress and sense of upheaval. This is not a humane way for a Manchester school to support grieving children
  • MP for Gorton, Afzal Khan has kindly written to Suzanne Finlay asking her to use her discretion to not take the children off‐roll at the school, but to no effect
We, the undersigned, are concerned citizens who urge Suzanne Finlay to act now&colon To use her discretion to ensure the Ali&dashImam children don’t lose their school places after the trip to their immediate family, to commemorate their late father and on GP’s advice. Furthermore, we believe a decision to take them off&dashroll is not only punitive but also breaches their right to a family life.
