The DA: STOP the sale of Maiden's Cove / Clifton public land to private developers

The DA
Dear Cape Town City Council,
Please STOP the sale of our public land, at Maiden’s Cove and Clifton, to private developers, for the construction of 50&dashodd luxury town&dashhouses, a hotel, a shopping centre and 750&dashcar garage.
The beloved Maiden’s Cove and Clifton Scenic Reserve is a world famous tourist attraction, precisely because of its incredible beauty, its simplicity, its heritage value, and its public open space.
After preservation for a hundred years from developers, all this will now be lost, to us and to future generations, and for what&quest &dash yet more ugly town&dashhousing, a shopping centre we don’t want, a massive paid&dashparking lot and a snobby hotel&quest
No thanks. We prefer our natural beauty and open public space. We would appreciate a board walk, and know that building a simple board walk actually has nothing to do with this selling&dashoff of our public property.
And what of the snarling traffic jams this development will bring, to an area already suffering massive congestion in summer&quest Is someone perhaps hiding the traffic impact report&quest
And where will the popular tourist busses be stopping, now that you’re taking out the free parking area&quest That space is also incredibly popular with those of us who’ve always used Maiden’s Cove, throughout Apartheid&quest Must we now pay for what was always free&quest
And what of the sewage from 50&plus new houses and hotel&quest The Atlantic Seaboard sewage system, built in the 70’s, is already NOT coping with the densification you keep pushing. Wouldn't our blue flag beaches be ‘brown flags’, if you shared the sewage results from throughout the year, especially now when the wind blows onshore. We've heard there's ecoli active in the bay and on the beach&quest
And what of the other Camps Bay field, whose lease expires next year. Is that priceless green space also earmarked for ‘disposal’, for yet another shopping&dashhousing complex&quest
Public land belongs to us all. It is NOT yours to sell, especially not on a whim, to balance your budget, or to make 50 private landowners happy. Selling our precious land should not be allowed without a 75&percnt&dashagreement referendum.
We’ve lost a lot of faith in our city council, recklessly pushing for this effective destruction of our beautiful tourist asset and heritage space. Does our council place enough value on preserving our precious un&dashbuilt environment&quest
And has the council done enough to address allegations that developers are getting special favours, possibly in return for party donations&quest How else can we explain the numerous building transgressions, and rampant densification, choking our city&quest
We’ve seen the plans for the BoKaap; and the brutal developments elsewhere; and some cruel evictions &dash all a slap in the face to so many locals who object. We’ve had to sue to save the Sea Point Promenade from commercial exploitation. We had to fight to save Princess Vlei.
Now we’re drawing the line, because you've put us in a corner, by ignoring so many valid objections. Drop the sale of our public land at Maiden’s Cove / Clifton. We are signing this in a desperate bid to save Cape Town.
Sincerely, We, the people who love and care for Cape Town

"Dear DA,
If you allow DeLille to proceed with the sale of our public land, at Maiden’s Cove and Clifton, to private developers, for the construction of 50&dashodd luxury town&dashhouses, a hotel, a shopping centre and 750&dashcar garage, we are threatening we will NOT vote DA in the coming elections.
We’ve lost a lot of faith in this DA under DeLille. Because she sees to be the one recklessly pushing for this effective destruction of our beautiful tourist asset and heritage space. Does she place any value on preserving our precious un&dashbuilt environment&quest
Now that the opposition is weak, you’ve become complacent. You’ve done nothing to address allegations that developers are getting special favours, possibly in return for party donations&quest
We know there’re other parties to vote for besides the DA, or ANC. We have Cope, the ACDP, the VF, the UDM, the DI and more. And there are others standing as individuals, to actually represent us, and not just the interests of party leaders.
We're sorry we've had to politicise this to get your attention, but you've put us in a corner, by ignoring so many valid objections.
So drop the sale of our public land at Maiden’s Cove / Clifton, or lose our votes."
