The President of Namibia, Dr. Hage Geingob
Namibia is the only country in the world where you can find desert lions. There are fewer desert lions in the world than mountain gorillas and now there are even fewer.
Three of the famous five "Muskateer"-males have been poisoned by nomad farmers after they killed a donkey. This happened a day before they would have been relocated from Tomakas to the Uniab Delta. This was a last ditch effort to minimize and solve the on-going human-lion conflict in these areas.
The lions carcasses and radio-collars were burnt.
“Whoever was responsible made a good job of destroying everything and hiding any evidence,” said [Dr. Flip] Stander. “This is truly a tragedy for Namibia's lion conservation efforts in a very challenging environment that balances lion and human coexistence.”
The Desert Lions Conservation Project is run by Dr. Flip Stander whose tireless efforts have ensured conflict has been at a minimum. But more needs to be done to ensure that these wonderful creatures survive.
We plead that more effort be made to educate nomadic farmers on how to avoid and discourage attacks on livestock.
We plead for more funding for Dr. Stander and his team at the Desert Lion Project.
We plead for special protection status for these lions and that they will not be considered for trophy hunting.
We plead for inquiries into each and every killing of these lions by the Ministry of Environment and Tourism and for punishment where applicable.
We plead for education and awareness of the benefits of protecting our animals and that children all across Namibia learn how important and unique the desert-adapted animals are.
Let's protect our last small number of desert lions!
