We write to you as Yemenis and world citizens, with family still in Yemen, to express our deepest concern about the alarming escalation of the war in Yemen and urge actions to end the ongoing military conflict and tackle the severe humanitarian crisis.

We form our opinions, based not only on our knowledge of Yemen, but also on conversations with many Yemenis in and outside of Yemen, who have been struggling, trying to get their families and friends out of the country. The devastation caused by the war will leave the field open for lawless society and for extremists to exploit the situation for their own ends.

However well intentioned it may have been from the outset, the current military action of the Saudi-led Arab coalition - aerial bombing and aerial and naval blockade of the country - is making the crisis worse. It is destroying precious infrastructure and killing lots of innocent people, e.g. workers on the night shift at two essential cooking oil and dairy products plants in the coastal town of Hodeida, road bridges, and historical buildings.

The Houthis and the forces loyal to ex-President Ali Abdallah Saleh respond with further destruction and street fighting in Aden, Lahj, Adhalea and Taiz, adding to the chaos and popular desperation in which groups like Al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) and Islamic State are able to organize themselves and flourish, win territory and increase their support in local communities, as they have done in some areas in the eastern part of Yemen.

Since 19 March 2015, the UN estimates the conflict has killed at least 1,080 people, wounded 4,350, and displaced more than 150,000. Yemen is one of the world’s poorest countries. According to the UN, more than half of the population – some 16 million out of 26 million - is in need of humanitarian aid and has no access to safe water. Yemen needs stability, investment and jobs, not destruction and despair. To create the right climate, the military conflict has got to stop and talks begin under UN auspices.

We don’t expect the Houthis and their allies to comply with the terms of UNSC resolution 2201 and withdraw from their present positions in advance of talks. We also do not know the intention of the aerial bombardment lead by Saudi Arabia, what it will achieve and when it will end. To insist on it would do no more than harden present attitudes, continue the conflict, make the present dreadful situation of the people of Yemen even worse, and lead to Yemen becoming completely ungovernable space.

We urge Avaaz supporters across the globe to take the lead in promoting urgent UN action to (a) provide food, fuel, medicines and other assistance to alleviate the deepening humanitarian crisis in Yemen and (b) to end the military conflict and begin the talking.
