The next Taoiseach of Ireland
Dear Taoiseach,
We, the undersigned, believe that each person sleeping rough on the streets of Ireland represents a failure of the state to protect people living in vulnerable situations. We believe that every family forced to seek refuge in emergency shelter illustrates a lack of concern on behalf of elected representatives for the well being and dignity of all of the people of Ireland.
The true measure of a society is how it cares for those in greatest need. The current homeless crisis is a national disgrace and the abject failure of the State to tackle it robustly is a dark cloud over our collective conscience. We urge you, Taoiseach, to take all necessary measures to ensure this does not continue.
In remedying the current crisis, the State must also put in place safeguards to ensure that such a crisis will never occur again. Ireland has ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. Both recognise the right to adequate housing as essential to ensuring basic human dignity is afforded to all.
To ensure that the current crisis is never allowed to repeat, we call for the right to adequate housing to be enshrined in the Irish Constitution.
Sincerely,
