The prime minister of Iraq Mr. Haider al-Abadi: Create a province in the Nineveh plain and arm its local defence force

The Assyrians of Iraq have suffered like much of the Iraqi people during the wars and violence affecting the country. Assyrians are the indigenous people of Iraq and their pacifistic nature has made them an easy target for terrorism. Assyrians have immigrated from Iraq in a larger percentage than other Iraqi communities. If nothing is done Iraq will soon loose it's major non-muslim community and its indigenous population.

The iraqi council of ministers agreed in principal on 21 January 2014 to form a new province in the Nineveh plain in northern Iraq. The creation of a new province would give the population in the Nineveh plain which includes many Assyrians and Yezidies a means of local self rule within the iraqi provincial system. It would give the minorities a say in the local affairs of their area and its protection.

The new iraqi government and parliament must press ahead with the formation of the Nineveh plain province according to the former governments decision and fast track the establishment of this province.

The iraqi government must also help arm and train a local defence force for the Nineveh plain made up from locals to ensure safety from terrorism.
