UN Human Rights Council, the EU, all countries in the world.
On May 7th 2014, Saudi blogger Raif Badawi has been sentenced to 1000 lashes, 10 years in prison and fines of more than $250,000 for the "crime" of insulting Islam. All that Raif did was discussing the politicization of Islam. He wrote about the danger of the spread of extremist ideas at universities, and wrote fiery argue for freedom of religion. He also wrote about Valentine's Day (banned by Saudi Arabia), and asked the simple question: Why?

Every week after Friday prayers, Raif is tortured in the square in front of the Al-Jafali mosque in Jeddah. Saudi Arabia is a member of the Human Rights Council of the UN since 2012 and Raif has only exercised his human right to freedom of belief and expression. It is unacceptable and downright disgusting that the UN Human Rights Council, the US and the EU are not fighting for the release of Raif.

A country that outrageously, brutally and violently breaches the rights of citizens, will not be impressed by a letter from an individual. More should be done.

1. The EU should demand the release of Raif, instead of worrying about our vacuum cleaners and toasters. Put sanctions on Saudi Arabia. Or does the EU just do this because of colonial interests, as to Putin?
2. The Human Rights Council should demand the release of Raif with the threat to be immediately removed from the board if the release is delayed. (Saudi Arabia is not entitled to membership. The board should use it to make more demands.)
3. All individual governments must demand the release of Raif. Put sanctions, see point 1.
4.The world must demand the release of Raif.

International pressure on Saudi rulers is his only chance. The possibility exists that Raif will not survive. He is diabetic and despite the fact that he is a particularly strong character, no human being can survive this punishment physically. Remember the 1000 lashes and know that you probably cannot realize how intensely painful that is. It is likely that the situation in the prison is miserable too.
