14 years ago, during the second "Intifada", Mohammad
Bakri went to see, with his own eyes, the results of the bloody battle that
occurred in Jenin refugee camp. The experience led him–a Palestinian citizen of Israel and
critically acclaimed actor, director and filmmaker who is well known for his
pursuit of peace–to create the film "Jenin, Jenin", which depicts
the events that occurred there from the point of view of the residents of the
refugee camp. When Bakri attempted to screen the film in theatres in Israel, he
was met with fierce legal and political opposition from various organizations that
tried to prevent the screenings in Israel and around the world. Since then,
Bakri has been persecuted and excluded from work as an actor in film and
theater. This has happened despite the fact that lawsuits against him have been
denied, and the Israeli Supreme Court decided that the screening of the film
"Jenin Jenin", as controversial as it may be, would not be prevented
due to freedom of speech. This week, years after these court decisions, a
former combat soldier sued Bakri for slander, demanding enormous sums in an
attempt to undermine his rights to screen his art in his country.
We,
friends and creators, are highly concerned with the attacks on creators who
express oppositional views. This persecution has severeimplications
for freedom of expression and basic rights in Israel. We support Mohammad
Bakri's right to tell the story of the residents of the Jenin camp through
their own eyes.
