The students at York University are exposed to second hand smoke from cigarettes everyday. Breathing in second hand smoke is detrimental to students health because of carcinogens and many other poisonous chemicals present inside of cigarettes. It is confirmed by the National Center for Biotechnology Information that Smoking kills millions of people each year and can cause mutations in your body's DNA which can lead to different types of cancers.

Breathing in second hand smoke is invasive to peoples breathing space, it is very irritating, it causes cancer, and it should not be permitted on the York campus for these reasons. Students who complete a four‐year Bachelor’s degree will breathe in second hand cigarette smoke for years as they walk across campus and potentially longer as they continue into Graduate studies. Over time, this puts students at risk for various types of cancers and health problems which can develop when they are exposed to toxic second hand cigarette smoke for many years.
