Protect the forests and their defenders

To Prime Minister Hun Sen, Minister of Environment Say Samal, and Koh Kong Provincial Court:

As citizens concerned about illegal logging worldwide and in Cambodia we urge you to uphold the right to protect the environment. We call on you to drop all charges against the Mother Nature Cambodia activists, and release Sim Samnang, Try Sovikea and Sun Mala; work with communities to save Cambodia's new protected forests, especially Prey Lang; and take strong steps to stop armed forces moonlighting for private companies.

Protect the forests and their defenders
Chut Wutty loved his homeland Cambodia's abundant forests -- and was murdered for trying to protect what was dear to him. Now the government banned a film about his work! But the story's gone viral and together, we can stand up for forest protection.

The lungs of the world are being depleted. It's a global crisis, and Cambodia is losing its forests at a faster rate than any other country, with a lot of the logging happening in those areas that have the highest value for plants and wildlife. Those who stand in the way of the powerful interests behind the chainsaws risk being jailed, or worse. Right now, three young activists are in prison on trumped-up charges because they dared to protect Cambodia's mangrove forests from destructive sand-dredging.

But the government has responded to public pressure before. With a trial against several forest defenders set in two weeks this is the perfect moment to call on Prime Minister Hun Sen and Environment Minister Say Samal to clamp down on deforestation, and protect the people fighting for Cambodia's forests -- let's act fast while the spotlight is on.
