Punishing poor Britain

To Prime Minister David Cameron:

Any reductions to tax credits for low paid workers must be accompanied by measures to ensure they earn a living wage. If the UK is One Nation, everyone, rich or poor, should be treated with fairness and respect. As concerned UK citizens, we call on you to ensure that government policy does not fail this basic test.

Punishing poor Britain

The Chancellor will slash tax credits for millions of low-paid workers today without making bosses pay more to cushion the blow. His targets aren’t work-shy, they’re the bleary eyed kitchen porter on the early morning bus or the exhausted cleaner turning out the office lights. Depriving their families of an average of £1,400 a year each shows just how much Mr Osborne understands budgeting on the breadline. If we raise a national outcry, we can get him to change his mind.

His boss, the Prime Minister, wants to be remembered as a compassionate Conservative. He says he wants to govern as a ‘One Nation’ Tory, not a Thatcherite. Let’s make clear to Cameron how he’ll be remembered if he lets his Chancellor punish the poor rather than require the bosses who exploit them to offer a fair level of pay.

Cuts to tax credits must only be introduced if the Chancellor makes up the difference by passing a law that forces bosses to pay their workers a living wage. Tell the Prime Minister to ensure the Chancellor doesn't throw more people into poverty. Sign the urgent petition now and share widely.
