Xenophobia in SA -- harmony over hate

To President Jacob Zuma:

As the people of South Africa, we come together as one -- appalled by the wave of xenophobic attacks that is sweeping our country, and determined that our united call for harmony can drown out the hate. As the leader of our nation, we ask that you formally acknowledge that the recent violence is linked to xenophobia. We also call on you to establish a permanent inter-departmental task force to identify and implement long term solutions to this issue. This is not the South Africa that so many people fought and died to create.

Xenophobia in SA -- harmony over hate

Our fellow Africans, our brothers and sisters, are under attack. As xenophobic violence continues to spread across the nation, thousands have fled their homes and many have died, some burned alive. Enough is enough -- the xenophobia infesting South Africa must be acknowledged and addressed -- right now.

This is not just a matter of law and order -- violence is the symptom, not the cause. The recent attacks are being driven by fear and intolerance, and fuelled by inflammatory statements from the likes of Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini and President Zuma’s own son. We need to push back with a different story -- one that will help to change attitudes and force reforms.

Let’s come together in a message of harmony and drown out the voices of hate. We’ll get prominent South Africans, including popular musicians, to amplify our call in the media and in the streets, and use the pressure to force our government to find real solutions to this issue. Sign now.
