Syria: the last straw

To US President Obama and President Rouhani of Iran:

As citizens around the world horrified by the slaughter of innocents and suffering in Syria, we call on you to put aside your differences and meet to find a diplomatic path forward that brings all parties to the table to negotiate a peace that saves lives. As the leaders of the US and Iran, you are in a unique position to help broker such a solution and you are both committed to the prevention of any further use of chemical weapons. There must be a diplomatic breakthrough. We are calling on you to create one.

Syria: the last straw
Right now, world leaders are fiercely debating how to respond to overwhelming evidence that hundreds of innocent families were gassed to death in their sleep by President Assad. It feels like Syria's darkest hour, but a glimmer of hope has emerged for diplomacy. Syria's war has been fueled by rivalry between Iran (Assad's biggest ally) and the West. But the newly elected moderate President Rouhani of Iran has offered an olive branch to the US by criticising the chemical attack, while his ally, former President Rafsanjani, is saying Assad did it. And in the US, 130 members of the Congress are calling on President Obama to start direct talks with Iran. We can't allow chemical weapons to be used with impunity, but a smart response includes exhausting diplomatic options. The whole world wants a solution for Syria -- if we can help channel that pressure onto US and Iranian leaders to talk, we could help build the international pressure on Assad to end this dirty war. Obama and Rouhani are deciding their next steps right now,but things are moving quickly and if not seized now this rare opportunity could be lost -- as soon as we reach one million signers, leaders in Congress and trusted diplomats in Tehran will deliver our call directly to the two presidents.
