A Safe Haven for Syrian Refugees

To council leaders across the UK:

Only 143 Syrian refugees have been resettled in the United Kingdom in the last four years. As British citizens, we call on you to accept fifty refugees for resettlement in your council. If each county council makes that pledge, we can collectively provide a safe haven for thousands of vulnerable families at a moment when they’ve never needed it more.

A Safe Haven for Syrian Refugees
Nobody wants to be a refugee. Forced to flee their home for a life of never-ending uncertainty and fear. Yet that's the life nine million Syrians are living right now. It’s a life none of us can fully grasp, but today we can build them a sanctuary of hope.

While chlorine bombs fall from the sky, Britain has resettled just 143 Syrians in the last four years, making it the least welcoming of all Western European countries. Germany has offered a home to 28,000 people -- 200 times more than we have.

The immigration debate has been held hostage by UKIP and fear mongering in the right-wing media. But together we can bypass that blockade and short-circuit the resettlement policy by urging local councils to accept more refugees, opening up a precious route to safety.

Citizens UK, an alliance of community organisations campaigning on this issue, will use our voices to directly lobby councillors for an increase in refugee resettlement. There’s no time to lose, sign and share now.
