A disaster the world can avoid

To UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon:

As citizens concerned about the victims of conflicts and natural disasters, we applaud your call to find the person with the best experience and skills to run the UN’s Humanitarian Affairs. We call on you to withstand pressure from powerful governments and ensure this and other UN appointments are made on the basis of merit, not nationality or patronage.

A disaster the world can avoid
The most important job in the humanitarian world is about to go to Andrew Lansley, a dangerously incompetent former UK minister who has never set foot in a war zone.

It’s an act of great cynicism to allow Lansley to be put forward: the closest he's ever been to a disaster zone is the one he left behind at the UK's health department. PM David Cameron put forward his good friend anyway because thanks to UN cronyism, he knows the country's had a lock on this role for nearly a decade. But now, the controversy kicked up by 70,000 UK Avaazers has put a spotlight on the principle that merit, not nationality, should be the deciding factor.

Together we can stop Lansley's ascent to power through this blatant act of cronyism, and make sure the next UN Humanitarian Chief is the people’s candidate. The hiring committee is meeting RIGHT NOW -- sign to support Secretary General Ban Ki-moon in holding out for the right person.
