Government of uganda
Hundreds of thousands of Ugandan young women are recruited each year for employment in middle East Countries as domestic workers or housemaids. Many of them seize this opportunity because they see it as a chance to lift themselves out of poverty. These women migrate to enter into an unregulated and informal work sector where domestic workers are not protected by local laws in the destination countries, and to work in the private sphere where the abuse they might be subjected to remains hidden from the public’s eye. While employed in Middle East countries, some women are overworked which leads to lack of sufficient sleep and they are denied of their rightful wages, furthermore they are mistreated and deprived of food.  Our sisters are subjected to various forms of abuse. These include: physical, sexual and psychological abuse, non-payment of wages, food and sleep deprivation, deprivation of life through strangling and involuntary debt bondage. Oftentimes workers are unable to overcome these challenges in order to seek an indemnification or injunction because of language barrier, or lack of knowledge of local laws, and restriction from moving freely. Even when language is not a barrier to seeking refuge from these cruelties, domestic workers are reluctant to do so because their residential status is tied to their employment. As result of all these abuse, our sisters are dying one by one and no action is being taken by our government to forge a way in which our sisters can be protected and their rights respected while at work but it has left the Arabian beasts to feed on the blood of our young energetic women and we have been left with one option to lament as we forge a way to have their remains brought back home for their final rest.
We call everyone to pledge to end inhumane treatment that our sisters are facing in the Arab countries. Daughters should bury their parents instead of parents burying their daughters.I strongly affirm that together we can make a difference.
