PEMRA: Stop Pakistani electronic media from broadcasting violent images
We would like to bring to Pakistan Electronic Media Regularity Authority (PEMRA)'s attention that multiple electronic media broadcasters are violating its Code of Conduct Sections (1)(b), (1)(i),(1)(l),and (1)(p) by regularly broadcasting violent and bloodied images of the Peshawar attack victims as well as of recently executed terrorists.
This is a direct legal infringement of the PEMRA code of conduct.
We call upon PEMRA to ensure that the electronic media do the following:
-Adhere to the journalistic code of ethics
-Maintain regard for the privacy and suffering of victims and their families in tragic incidents
-Refrain from broadcasting images of death and destruction
-Stop glorifying the death penalty, as it represents the most extreme form of violence permitted by the state of Pakistan
Pakistanis and their children have already suffered tremendous trauma in the wake of the Peshawar tragedy. They do not need to be further subjected to grisly images each time they switch on the news. The media's broadcasting of these images is a violation of the victims' and their families' privacy.
In addition, the media's glorifying the recent executions of terrorists implies that killing is the only answer to Pakistan's problems with extremism. We want our children to know that peace and tolerance, and shunning every kind of extremism are the real way forward.
