Gottfrid Svartholm Warg, aka anakata, is a Swedish computer genius and free internet advocate who founded both The Pirate Bay and PRQ, the famous BitTorrent website and a webhost company respectively. He also worked as a wikileaks consultant decrypting the famous Collateral Murder video, leaked by Chelsea Manning. Anakata has been in prison in Denmark since November 2013 on alleged hacking accusations. Charges have not yet been pressed against him, as authorities claim they need more time to investigate. Investigations began in June 2013, when he was still in prison in Sweden, also for hacking accusations - one of which, the Nordea bank, he was completely acquitted due to the testimony of independent computer specialist Jacob Appelbaum.
Since his arrival in Denmark, Gottfrid has had many difficulties to overcome. He was initially sent to a maximum security facility which houses only 25 innmates (Denmark has approximately 4,000 people in its prisons). He was then moved to another prison. In both venues he spent a lot of time in solitary confinement, being released the last time on 2 Jan. No judges requested such practice. Instead, this was a decision made by the prison staff. This made it very difficult for his lawyer to explain and appeal against his isolation. He was also denied access to his own books initially, as prison staff were claiming that they could contain "secret messages". Since our first petition, which went viral and within days escalated to 50k and then 100k+ signatures, we requested that he was freed and allowed access to his books. He now may have up to 10 books in his cell, as well as request books from the prison library and play with his PS2 - they were all cleared from the possible hidden messages in one go!
In spite of such a great victory, he still has many needs. The only two people from outside who he may have contact with are his mother and lawyer only. Furthermore, authorities are claiming that letters written in English and Swedish may take a long time to reach him, as everything needs to go through security checks, including to look for the "secretive hidden messages".
Most of his supporters are either Swedish or English speakers. Advising us to write mail to him in Danish seems a bit inappropriate, as we all know that Swedish and Danish are very close languages, and that Denmark has one of the best educations in the world, with practically all its citizens being fluent in English.
We therefore ask the Danish highest authority, Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt, to allow Gottfrid to receive his mail in English and Swedish as promptly as possible, designating staff to work on his case who are necessarily fluent in English and Swedish.
When in prison, priorities change. Somethings apparently as small as letters may make your day a little easier, maybe even fun. Anakata has been through a huge ordeal in the past year and a half. Let´s all work together to ease his life a little bit, like he has done for all of us so many times! Please sign and share this petition.
