Ocean pollution not only effects aquatic life, but human life as well. From fisherman all the way to entire economies, the effects of plastic pollution is devastating. Immediate change is needed or the effects can become irreversible.

Coca-Cola is one of the biggest dumpers of trash into the ocean in the world. Over 11,000 pieces of plastic that came from Coke were found in almost 37 different countries. The biggest cause for this was Coke’s single-use, plastic bottles. The reason being: Customer’s like them too much. They are convenient and can be sold virtually anywhere.

In order for the pollution to be cut back, Coca-Cola must cut back on the amount of plastic they produce and switch over to a more Eco-friendly material. By doing this, Coca-Cola can cut back the amount of plastic they dump into oceans and instead turn to a biodegradable material that will not harm wildlife, the economy, and ultimately restore the beauty of our environment.

We believe Coca-Cola must switch over to using a biodegradable plastic for their bottle in order to alleviate the damage regular plastic bottles are causing. In order to get Coke to achieve this, we must go after their stakeholders and pressure Chief of Public Affairs, Communication and Sustainability-Joanna Price. The best stakeholder to go after is the company that makes the bottles for Coke by exploiting the amount of damage their bottles are causing to the environment. The public needs to have their emotions tapped by showing them the damage plastic is causing to animals and coastal communities. The public will then put a large amount of pressure to get the companies to change their ways. If the bottling company was pressured to switch to biodegradable bottles, big changes can be made in order to decrease the amount of plastic in the ocean.

We believe that in order for Coke to prove that they care about this issue, they must also pressure the bottle company to switch to biodegradable plastic as well as finding a different, more Eco-friendly, way of disposing its trash. These are the first steps Coke must take in order to solve a disastrous environmental crisis.
