Minister Barbara Creecy - Dept of Environment, Forestry & Fisheries
The African penguin is listed as ENDANGERED on the IUCN Red List (2018), and will be facing extinction soon unless drastic changes are made.

It is widely acknowledged that the predominant driver of this species’ recent decline is the poor availability of their prey , mostly anchovy and sardine, which are also targeted by the commercial fishing industry . Commercial fisheries have forced penguins to feed on less nutritious prey and swim miles farther to find food, even as climate change and ocean warming are making the penguins’ prey more scarce.

According to leading scientists and NGOs working on this issue, implementing island closures -- fishing exclusion zones of at least 20km around breeding colonies -- will provide significant relief to the penguins by ensuring that fish that enter their foraging areas will be accessible to them without the stress of competing with the fishing industry.

Minister Creecy, we demand that you immediately implement fishing closures around the 6 largest breeding colonies of African Penguins: Dassen Island, Robben Island, St Croix Island, Bird Island, Stony Point and Dyer Island.

Don't fail our penguins. Their fate is in your hands.
