Richard Saghian, CEO of Fashion Nova
How many times have you scrolled through Instagram and seen people wearing the same outfit?
Due to the constant pressure that the fast fashion industry has created for its consumers, not so often. Fast fashion companies, such as Fashion Nova, have taken advantage of social media and the influencers who use these platforms to promote the brand products. Social media has come to be used to portray younger generations as obsessed with materialism, keeping up with trends that are constantly developing. As a result, many people are now willing to invest in lower quality clothing to stay up-to-date with the latest fashion trends, rather than investing in better quality and longer-lasting clothes. The situation has created an incentive for companies, such as Fashion Nova, to continue to push the limits of clothing production and create new pieces at an alarmingly fast rate.

Fashion Nova introduces around 1,000 new arrivals to its website every week, but Richard Saghian, CEO of Fashion Nova, has stated that he wants to increase this pace!
He believes that consumers want to and should be posting new clothing on a regular basis. He's stated before, “We don’t want girls showing up to the club in the same outfit. We need 50 different denim jackets. Not just one.” It is clear that the CEO himself is not concerned with the environmental impacts caused by the fast fashion industry, even though he witnesses the entire supply chain. He has not considered more sustainable options and making the supply chain climate neutral.

The Problem & Our Solution
The company needs to take responsibility, reducing the demand for natural resources, and address how their clothing production impacts the environment:
  • climate change
  • hazardous chemicals
  • water pollution that comes from microfibers

Fashion Nova should create more durable clothing in order to extend the lifespan and consider the material used in production. Therefore, we are demanding that Fashion Nova works with a sustainable recycling partnership as soon as possible just like Bangladesh has done. Bangladesh’s garment factories have partnered with "The Circular Fashion Partnership" to cut down textile waste and reuse materials. Bangladesh has adapted to a circular business model that does not focus on “take-make-dispose” clothing. It has influenced other fashion industries, like H&M and Kmart Australia to partner with a movement that practices sustainability.

What We Can Accomplish

A partnership with this mission will cut down greenhouse emissions, fossil fuels, and carbon emissions. A recycling partnership can help put unsold clothing into use while beginning the process of making clothes more eco-friendly. We must help prevent further fashion waste, as our health is on the line. If not, our shopping decisions will continue to destroy our environment and leave us in our own waste.
