La Presidenta de Chile Michelle Bachelet: Detenga YA los incendios forestales en las Reservas Nacionales de Chile

Le exigimos a la Presidenta Michelle Bachelet que ocupe todos los recursos necesarios para extinguir los incendios que afectan comunidades pehuenches y parques nacionales como Conguillio, China Muerta, Tolhuaca, Ñuble y Río Puelo.

Un gran incendio está destruyendo miles de hectáreas de bosque nativo, especialmente araucarias. El Estado no está haciendo lo necesario, ni mucho menos, como para contener las llamas. Los grandes medios han desinformado al sostener que el fuego se ha controlado –como hizo Televisión Nacional (TVN) el sábado 21 de marzo- en circunstancias que sucede lo contrario.
Las comunidades pehuenches afectadas denuncian que no ha llegado ningún tipo de ayuda, tal como expresó en carta abierta la Comunidad Pewenche de Kmkeñ-Quinquén el 20 de marzo.
Cabe destacar que los parajes afectados son de los más bellos de Chile y del mundo, y son también un ecosistema fundamental para la vida de la región, en especial por sus fuentes de agua en medio de la severa crisis hídrica, siendo este un daño irreparable.
Sabemos que la venta de madera de araucaria muerta puede ser un negocio muy lucrativo, motivo que podría estar detrás de estos incendios. Lamentablemente, la historia de nuestro país ya tiene antecedentes de grandes incendios intencionales. Asimismo, es claro que hay empresas forestales interesadas en seguir expandiendo sus monocultivos de pino insigne y eucaliptus, en el boscoso territorio pehuenche. Estas empresas reciben subsidios del Estado a través del Decreto Ley 701, de 1974 (DL 701), que usted equivocadamente quiere mantener, pese a la contaminación, sequía e incendios que provocan estas plantaciones.
También estamos enterados que en las proximidades de la Reserva de China Muerta hay un proyecto minero de oro y cobre que podría verse favorecido con el despoblamiento araucarias, que son Monumento Natural, por Decreto Supremo 43, de 1990.
Le rogamos que después de tantos días de pasividad declare zona de catástrofe, lo que permitiría movilizar los recursos necesarios para hacer frente a esta tragedia. Es cierto que el fuego se ha estado atacando, pero tal como se ha reconocido desde el mismo Gobierno, esto se ha hecho con recursos insuficientes y esta ineficiencia ha provocado la expansión de los incendios a otras reservas naturales.
Si el gobierno de Chile carece de los recursos para detener el fuego, queremos pedir que solicite la ayuda técnica de países vecinos, especialmente grandes aviones cisterna.
Es nuestro deber país y suyo, como Presidenta, permitir que futuras generaciones puedan disfrutar de los tesoros naturales que hoy se están quemando.

We ask the President of Chile, Michelle Bachelet to use every necessary mean to fight the fire affecting the Pehuenche communities and nationals parks like Conguillío, China Muerta, Tolhuaca, Ñuble and Río Pueblo.
Mrs. President of the Republic of Chile, Michelle Bachelet,
A huge fire is destroying thousands of hectares of native forests, especially the thousand-year-old araucaria forests. The Chilean State is not doing enough to stop the fire. The Chilean media have been lying about the situation stating that the fire is under control, as did the Television Station TVN on March 21th, when the opposite is occurring.
The Pehuenche communities affected by these fires have denounced that no aid has arrived to this zone, as stated in
an open letter issued on March 20th by the Pewenche Community of Kmkeñ-Quinquén.
It must be brought to your attention, that the landscapes affected are among the most beautiful in Chile and worldwide.
They are also a fundamental ecosystem regarding life in that region, especially in terms of its water sources in the middle of the current water crisis, thus, the damage made by the fire is irreparable.
We know that selling the wood of dead araucaria can be really lucrative, which can also be the real cause of this fire. Sadly, Chilean history is full of cases of man-made fires. It is also
clear that big companies of the forest industry want to keep expanding their insigne pine and eucalyptus monoculture plantations in the thick forested Pehuenche region. These companies receive subsidies from the government through
the Decree-Law N° 701 from 1974 (DL 701), which you mistakenly want to extend in spite of the pollution, drought and fires caused by those plantations.
We also know that near the Nature Reserve China Muerta a gold and copper mining project is being planned, which can also benefit from the araucaria-tree depopulation which are national monuments by the Supreme Decree 43 from 1990.
We beg you after so many days of passivity to declare this territory a catastrophe zone, which will mobilize the resources required to face this tragedy properly. It is true that the fire has been fought, but as the government itself has recognized, the means have not been enough and this inefficiency has helped the fire to expand to other nature reserves.
If the State of Chile lacks of means to stop the fire, we beg you to ask for technical aid from neighboring countries, especially for big firefighting aircrafts.
It is our duty and yours, as the President, to allow future generations to enjoy the natural treasures that are currently on fire.
