"Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega: Don’t destroy the indigenous community of Bangkukuk Taik
Building a deepwater port, for the development of the Nicaraguan Interoceanic Canal, in the lands of the Rama community of Bangkukuk Taik/Punta de Águila in Nicaragua’s Caribbean Coast—without holding consultations, and therefore without having received free, prior, and informed consent as established by international standards for the protection of human rights that Nicaragua has committed to respect—would disintegrate the community, and with the destruction of the community of Bangkukuk Taik, which includes the last speakers of the Rama language, would wipe out a language and culture that is unique in the world.Carlos Willis, traditional authority of the Community, states: We dont`n know what will happen with our community...where will We go...how are We going to live...They have not even asked us if We want that Canal"
