ENGLISH
It is with growing apprehension that we observe the changes that are taking place on our island as part of a so-called ‘growth’.

The triggering event has been the placing of amenities (sunbeds – beach umbrellas) on the beach of Levrossos, opposite the port of Aegiali (legal according to law 2971/2001, valid through April 2019). There followed the granting – under unclear circumstances – of a permit for the placement of similar amenities on the beach of Gramvoussa at the southern end of the island. All this when there are already some beaches for which ‘mild’ exploitation is allowed, according to the decision of the City Council in 2015, of which no change has been made public. It must be noted that even on those beaches there seem to be violations of the law such as exceeding the area in question and the number of sunbeds and umbrellas.

It is our belief that placing amenities on the beaches is unsightly, burdens the environment significantly, alters the identity of the island, limits the bathers’ visibility, reduces the available space on our small beaches and provokes public indignation.

We also notice that the aforementioned changes take place while there are big environmental issues, such as the absence of: proper sewage disposal, water, rubbish bins, recycling, biological treatment of waste water, proper infrastructure and specific planning for free camping, adequate means of public transport and any control of the number of vehicles allowed on the island.

While Amorgos has the longest coastline among the islands of the Cyclades it also has the fewest beaches. Thus people who prefer organized beaches that are accessible by car are not very likely to constitute the majority of our island’s visitors. However Amorgos has great natural beauty, traditional villages, breathtaking mountains and a 55km-long path network, all of which reflect its history.

All of the above attract visitors all year long, so targeting those tourists who are looking for an alternative kind of holiday can only benefit the island and multiply its faithful friends, as it has done for decades. Those are its advantages and it is very important that they are preserved, promoted and deployed to the benefit of all the residents of Amorgos. We need a sustainable growth instead of trying to imitate models of growth followed by other islands with very different types of potential infrastructure.

For the same reasons we worry about the inclusion of Amorgos by the Cyclades Chamber of Commerce in a pilot scheme concerning cruise ships. It is a kind of tourism for which Amorgos will put at stake the beauty of its landscape as well as the balance of its ecosystem, considering its morphology and its numerous environmental issues.

The residents of an island have a constitutional right to express their will about the appearance of their island and to lead the Municipal Authorities into taking decisions that will defend it. We mention the example of Koufonissi, where the local authorities have banned sunbeds in all its beaches, are discussing banning cars, too and despite these facts it still attracts high-end tourism.

Regardless of the legitimacy of the decisions taken and which affect the quality of life of the residents of a place, every City Council, as the people’s lawful representatives, ought to take into account their worries and proposals.

          ACTIVE CITIZENS OF AMORGOS
