Government of India
There are a number of growing opticians in India where individuals perform Visual Acuity Tests (Eye Test) without any knowledge or degree of optometry. Contact lenses are sold at general stores and prescriptions are prescribed by unqualified individuals. This is a serious matter, as due to their illiteracy, there have been a number of cases where patients have lost their eyesight and suffered permanent damage to their eyes. Only Optometrists with either Diploma of 3 years or Degree of 4 years Certified by the Government Of India should be allowed to practice eye tests and dispensing visual aids or prescribe optical correction.
