We are citizens from Greene County and the Miami Valley who respect and value the role that Wright State University serves in our community and throughout the state of Ohio.  We join together with those who are concerned about the health and sustainability of this important educational institution to better inform the public of the dire circumstances still to be faced, and to ask the Board of Trustees to address those concerns in a responsible manner.

The recent AAUP-WSU faculty strike brought to a head the financial and administrative turmoil inflicted upon the university over the past several years. As outlined in the comprehensive Plante Moran audit report covering 2010-2016, $130 million in reserves drained from the WSU coffers during that time period with little or no accountability. This includes $16 million from the State of Ohio in grant monies earmarked for “workforce development” which, according to the report, cannot in any way be tracked or explained. This period has put the school on the brink of financial insolvency.

Instead of owning up to their mismanagement and accepting responsibility, the Board of Trustees who oversaw these vanishing funds has chosen to point fingers, to deny culpability, and to balance the WSU budget on the backs of employees and faculty while they and the administration remain above the fray. This negligence resulted in the aforementioned faculty strike, and the resolution of that walkout has not resolved all the issues.

Public faith and confidence in WSU has plummeted dramatically.
Parents and students are in the process of deciding where they will attend school in the fall, and evidence shows that schools experiencing the kind of serious financial and labor disruption that Wright State has suffered through are at great risk of significant drop-offs in student enrollment. The 2018-19 term has already had a 10% drop-off in enrollment ; we – and the WSU community – cannot allow this to continue. We must act now to restore the faith of prospective students and their families in the health and well-being of WSU.

On behalf of Wright State’s future , we ask the Board of Trustees to do the honorable thing – the right thing – by admitting their errors and stepping down to allow a new, untainted Board to be appointed who can lead WSU forward with integrity. We call on Governor Mike DeWine, who holds the responsibility for making such appointments, to ensure that this transition takes place, and that the current Board is replaced with respected local leaders who have no conflicts of interest.  Also, we ask Department of Higher Education Chancellor Randy Gardner and Greene County's State Senator Bob Hackett and State Representative Rick Perales to provide the leadership and support required to save Wright State.
