STOP THE MINING PLANS IN THE KRUGER NATIONAL PARK.

The Kruger National Park, South Africa’s biggest and most important national park, is under threat.
Mining companies are planning to prospect and mine for iron along the banks of the Crocodile River on the border of Kruger. The Department of Mineral Resources will grant the mining companies the right to mine for at least 5 years with the possibility to extend if prospecting is successful.

If mining will be allowed in the park, the consequences will be vast. The mine will take over 13.000 hectares on the borders of the river. The safety and biodiversity of the park’s wildlife and nature will be under severe treat. Open-cast mining will result in major pollution of the river and will permanently change the landscape. There will most likely be a decline in eco-tourism which accounts for the financials of the park and long-term job creation, which will all be in jeopardize when tourist number will decline. Wildlife economy is very sustainable and drives the provinces economy, which makes mining unnecessary for economical reasons.

The park is home to many endangered species and is currently the only park in Africa that has a sustainable and free roaming Big 5 population, including over 80% of the global rhino population.
If this mining issue develops, it will be another blow for the Kruger National Park, on top of the poaching crisis that has hit the park in the recent years. Elephant habitat is heavily under pressure. Removal of elephants because of vegetation destruction has been heavily debated, but the mining company will destroy more trees than elephants can ever do in a lifetime. Every hectare counts for free roaming wildlife.

You can help by signing this petition and put a stop to the mining plans. We cannot afford our natural treasures to be under such risk and suffering in times that the wildlife and nature of Africa is already under such pressure from human exploitation and greed. This petition will be handed in at the Department of Mineral Resources as an objective to the mining application. The Kruger National Park and it’s wildlife deserves a prosperous and safe future!
