The Telecommunications Authority of Trinidad and Tobago is the independent body responsible for regulating broadcasting in Trinidad and Tobago.
We live a world where violence against women and girls is still a tragic part of reality - so much so that the United Nations has called it a global pandemic (http://endviolence.un.org/about.shtml). Violence and in particular sexual violence against women cannot be endorsed or encouraged in any society and particularly not in Trinidad and Tobago's society.

According the the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) domestic violence is endemic in Trinidad and Tobago (http://www.undp.org.tt/mdg/mdg3/mdg3unite.html). Rape and sexual assault are also a serious problem in our society. The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service's statistics show 933 rapes being reported in 2012 and 337 reported in the January-August period of 2013 (http://www.ttps.gov.tt/Statistics.aspx). This does not even take into account the fact that only a fraction of sexual assaults, rape and domestic violence are reported to the police as victims are often fearful of being ostracised, shamed, punished by their abusers or not being believed at all.

It is important that we as a society do what we can to ensure that attitudes encouraging violence, especially sexual violence towards women are not tolerated, propagated or institutionalised through culture. Music is a fundamental apparatus of Caribbean culture and this petition is a step towards changing the trend of music that endorses violence against women.
