Waste disposal in the Bahamas is in the Stone Age and is a blight on our environment that already causes human suffering. On New Providence Island, where the Capital Nassau is situated, the landfill often erupts into flames and the pall of smoke envelops the island for weeks at a time. This area which is about 500 acres in the middle of the island is one large uncontrolled dump site with little or no organization. The sad thing is this is nearly the best organized site in the Bahamas with the exception of the one in Grand Bahama. Scattered all over the 29 major islands there are dozens of dump sites. Many are no more than a pile of rubbish which is burned from time to time to keep the volume down. All of them are a mixture of everything left over from human activity such as household rubbish, garden rubbish and construction debris. In most if not all there is no separation of any components for reuse or recycling. Everywhere the pollution aspect of these activities goes unchecked. The real problem is that no one of any political party cares. There is no effort at educating the population in this regard. The general notion is that there is no profit in correcting this, only cost. The real cost however is allowing it to go unchecked.
