SHIPS OF SHAME
South Africa, is part of the vile and cruel live animal sea export industry, where financial gain outweighs the welfare and rights of animals. 'Livestock' have been shipped from East London to Mauritius for years, and it is now time to take a stand.
Animals become ill and lethargic, sea sick and often end up with broken legs. – See Research (Animal Welfare 1994, 3: 213-218 {UFAW} by X Manatca and J. M. Deag)
The animals are then offloaded in Mauritius where inadequate loading/off-loading facilities exist and insufficient attention is given to general welfare and slaughter standards (i.e. animals are not stunned prior to throat cutting). The humane handling and slaughter of animals is not the case in Mauritius.
The meat sold in Mauritius is generally purchased by Halaal customers and the slaughter of animals is based on the requirements of the Islamic faith. However, the welfare of animals in Mauritius is not a priority .
Ban Animal Trading (BAT), has heard that the South African government is in the process of approving the shipments of farm animals to Indonesia every year. There are no South African regulations that govern the welfare of animals exported by sea.
It was ABC's Four Corners airing of footage in 2011 from slaughterhouses in Indonesia where imported Australian cattle skated and slipped in blood as unskilled workers stabbed and slashed them with blunt knives that triggered a wave of revulsion.
Live sea exports are CRUEL AND INHUMANE:
1. Farm animals are land animals. The motion of the ship will cause seasickness ~ just like it does in many humans.
2. Cattle are loaded onto different decks made of iron grids that allow for urine and faeces from the upper levels to fall on those on the lower levels.
3. Cattle on the lower decks become covered in faeces and are unable to breathe properly due to poor ventilation.
4. There is an overpowering smell and ammonia builds up because animal excretions are not removed regularly.
5. When animals are penned at high densities, they cannot eat, sleep, or interact in social structures.
6. The animals do not have space to lie down at the same time, and they become fatigued.
7. There are inhumane stresses on the animals caused by noise, lighting and heat.
8. The animals are then offloaded in Mauritius where inadequate loading/off-loading facilities exist and insufficient attention is given to general welfare and slaughter standards (i.e. animals are not stunned prior to throat cutting).
Thousands of deaths en route are explained away as the result of ''shy feeding'', ''inanition” (exhaustion caused by lack of nourishment) and ''ventilation failure'' - or, dispensing with the doublespeak of the industry, ''starvation'' and ''suffocation''
These transport vessels are ''ships of death''. Distressed animals slip in their own excrement as the ships toss and turn in stormy weather, and are packed in so tightly that they crush one another. Most animals who are exported live for slaughter have their throats cut while fully conscious.
Millions have died at sea. Some 35 investigations have revealed that in destination countries, many animals endure routine abuse and brutal slaughter in places where laws do not protect them from cruelty.
Every day that live export continues is another day of suffering for animals. It's time for South African politicians to end the cruelty of this trade. For animals, a step onto a live export ship can lead to a most cruel and brutal fate.
In the last 12 months alone, live export has been responsible for eye stabbing, tendon slashing, sledge hammering, and countless other preventable acts of cruelty.
On the 13th. July 2015, a live export ship sank in the Gulf of Aden and 3,000 animals perished. This catastrophe is not an isolated one to happen there.
WHAT YOU CAN DO:
Please share this campaign with all friends and relatives, globally. Your MP was elected to do one thing: represent you. And you probably want the cruelty of live export to stop. Yet most politicians are still toeing outdated party lines in support of this cruel and unnecessary trade.
