A Child's right to optimum nutrition is enshrined in South Africa's constitution.
Breastfeeding is the only biologically normal way of feeding a baby. The World Health Organisation strongly recommends for all children to be breastfed for at least two years, early cessation of breastfeeding due to returning to work places both mother and child's health at risk. Low breastfeeding rates have an adverse effect on both the economic and health sectors of South Africa.This Bill will allow breastfeeding mothers the option to express for up to a year after the birth of her child, or have the child brought to the workplace for scheduled feeds.
