The following piece of news appeared recently:

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/norwegian-army-placed-on-strict-vegetarian-diet-8951722.html

“The Norwegian military has announced plans to introduce “meatless Mondays” into army diets,….”

As a vegetarian I am of the opinion that all people should quit meat eating. Of course, in a democratic society this cannot be imposed on people from above.

With the military, however, this is not the case. By job description they have to obey the orders from superiors. By job description they have to be able to bear harsh conditions. That’s why, vegetarianism can be lawfully imposed on the military by the respective Commander-in-chief. Vegetarianism 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

Vegetarianism is defined as exclusion of meat, fish, caviar, all sorts of killed or dead representatives of the fauna including, but not limited to, mussels, shrimp, crabs, as well as fertilized eggs of birds or other creatures. Non-fertilized eggs are undesirable and constitute a borderline case between vegetarianism and non-vegetarianism.

The military servicemen have to fast every two or four weeks only on water!

Bearing hunger is often exigent during a war and therefore the ability to bear hunger has to be part of maintaining combat readiness and skills. Here we think of the Siege of Leningrad.

And finally, why we should on principle be vegetarians:

“Those who kill animals and give them unnecessary pain—as people do in slaughterhouses—will be killed in the same way in the next life and in many lives to come...” Srila Prabhupada

Even if they do not believe in reincarnation and the law of Karma, people should be vegetarians.
Christians do not cook and eat human meat. And thank God! This is regarded as savage and barbaric.

Jesus says: Be perfect, as your Heavenly Father is perfect.
Hence follows that in order to be as similar in perfection as possible to God, one should quit meat-eating.

December 2009 Paul McCartney and officials from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change addressed the EU Parliament with the admonition to cut back on meat consumption, if they want to help the planet with respect to global warming.

Through vegetarianism everyone can contribute to curbing the global warming and towards a more peaceful world.
