JE SUIS SYRIENNE. HUNGER STRIKE PETITION

"Hey you! Don’t help them to bury the live.
Don’t give in without a fight."
(Pink Floyd, “The Wall", “Hey you")

After 4 years of civil war, the statistics are shocking in Syria: over 200.000 deaths, around 4 millions of external refugees, over 10 millions internally displaced people, forced from their homes (approximately half of the current population), more than 600.000 still blocked in governmental sieges (without access to water, food, electric energy, heating, hygiene products or medicines, „helped" by the regime only with barrel bombs attacks (sometimes chemical attacks), enforced disappearances and arrests), hundreds of thousands detained, tens of thousands killed in prisons/detentions centers. Many children have been arrested/enforced to disappear, raped and tortured (sometimes up to death) by the security forces or by the pro-governmental militias Shabiha.

Unfortunately, we’re not talking about numbers/statistics, they are not "collateral damage", "biological waste", "enemies of people", "American spies", "terrorists", "defectors" or maybe "Satan" himself. They are people. Besieged and suffocated by „the Wall" of ignorance, indifference and hate (like in Pink Floyd, “The Wall"). The Syrians’ nightmare has become my own nightmare, for more than 4 years (it doesn’t let me live and sleep either). Such as other Syrians, I have survived up to now. Anyway, simple surviving is not life. Life can’t be without peace, liberty, democracy, human rights respect, a minimum standard of living. Life means normality. 2+2 to make 4, not 5, not minus twenty three millions (the Syrian population before war in 2011) or as much as Big Brother wants. "Hunger Games" and the surviving lesson? No, unluckily, it’s more like the lesson of abandon and despair, the agony of the crucified people, left alone on the cross. What are we doing? Just waiting until we all vanish in silence... in a silence thrilling like a roar? "History is a nightmare from which I am trying to awake.", Stephen Dedalus used to say in James Joyce’s novel "Ulysses". We have been trying to wake up from the Syrian nightmare, but it seems that we’re still captive in it. "Is there anybody out there?"

WHAT DOES AN ORDINARY CHILD WANT? Toys, an iPad, an iPhone, a video game, new cloths, school requisites and maybe… another pizza.
WHAT DOES A SYRIAN CHILD WANT (especially in the besieged areas)? To melt snow and have water to drink, to find something comestible (even a spider, a rat or a snake), to discover a new furniture to burn in order to get a warm and to survive the next barrel bombs bombarding.

An ordinary person makes PLANS OF LIFE (where to go on vacation, how to decorate the house, where to send the kids to school etc.).
A Syrian makes PLANS OF DEATH: he/she would like to be killed by barrel bombs rather than by chemical attacks, kidnapping, arrests or starvation.

However, in this context, many people are trying to “stay human", if “not alive", in Orwell’s terms. That’s why, in the memory of my Syrian children (angels right now) and in solidarity with the others who continue to suffer, trying in the same time to “stay human", I start hunger strike on my birthday (2015, May, 17th), hoping to receive as a birthday present peace, freedom and democracy in Syria and strong warranties for the future prevention of any political crime, especially crimes against humanity. Hunger strike is just a minor physical discomfort, it doesn’t mean too much by comparison with the Syrians’ torment (and the pain in my soul – unbearable). "The only thing that is unbearable is that nothing is unbearable", Malraux pointed out some time ago. I assure Malraux that the Syrians’ pain and my inner agony are unbearable.

In this regard, I solicit:

• Stop indiscriminate bombarding, including barrel bombs, using a “no fly zone" if necessary
• Start immediately serious peace negotiations between all Syrian groups (including the nonviolent, democratic activists) and their international backers
• Stop the chemical attacks (sarin gas, chlorine, etc.)
• Lift all sieges
• Facilitate rapid and unobstructed humanitarian aid to the people in need (especially in the areas besieged by the
Syrian regime)
• Stop arbitrary detention and enforced disappearances
• Stop kidnapping, raping, torturing and executing
civilians, including children; stop Shabiha’s, security forces’ and ISIS abuses and crimes
• Release the political detainees
• Refer the perpetrators of crimes against
humanity to justice (through the International Criminal Court, an ad-hoc international tribunal, etc.)
• Start UN reform in order to stop now and forever crimes against humanity (discussing France proposal in this regard, launching an international public debate and adopting the best variant); the UN Security Council should not to be blocked any more by Russia’s and China’s vetoes in case of crimes against humanity.
• Iran, Russia: stop supporting politically and militarily al-Assad regime, the main responsible for the present disaster.

Right now I feel crucified for everybody suffering in Syria and I wish I could free myself (together with all Syrians). I don’t want to let people alone on the cross. I refuse to be “another brick in the Wall" and to witness this nightmare passively, "comfortably numb" (in front of TV/internet). I hope we’ll wake up from it, we’ll break "the Wall" of ignorance, indifference and hate together and we’ll make the alien Planet Syria, the "orphanage," a real home for all Syrians. An orphanage is not home. My Syrian children shouldn’t surrender when they see a camera (taking it as a gun), they should smile.

Wake up, Planet Syria! Wake up, Earth!

Je suis syrienne.

"Hey you! Don’t tell me there’s no hope at all.
Together we stand, divided we fall."
(Pink Floyd, “The Wall", “Hey you")

Stay human... and alive!
