Tell British Columbians which independent power projects are under review and place a moratorium on all IPPs.
Your BC Hydro bill is set to rise by as much as 26.4 percent. Why? The BC Liberals have been meddling with BC Hydro since 2001 and now British Columbians are on the hook for over $50 BILLION for electricity purchase agreements with Independent Power Producers (IPPs). Under the BC Liberals' flawed 'Clean' Energy policy, BC Hydro is forced to buy power from IPPs at three to four times the market rate. B.C. does not need this power, because we have a five to ten-year energy surplus. In recognition of this energy surplus, the BC government recently took some steps in the right direction by announcing that it had cancelled four IPP contracts and are reportedly reviewing an additional 16. The government, however, refuses to share which contracts are under review. Surely British Columbians have a right to know which IPP contracts have been cancelled and are under review?
The majority of IPP projects are river diversion or run-of-river projects, which are ruining our wild rivers and endangering our wild salmon and other wildlife. The only ones to benefit are IPP shareholders, BC Hydro insiders and their BC Liberal buddies who are offered well paying jobs by IPPs. Given our energy surplus, the BC government should place a moratorium on all IPPs. Public rivers and land should not be given away for private profit off the backs of British Columbians. Sign this petition now to save your wallet and our wild rivers! Many thanks.
