Since the Barton Moss Community Protection Camp was set up in protest of exploratory drilling by IGas for the purposes of fracking, there have been multiple incidences of heavy-handed police tactics against protesters. Greater Manchester Police have deployed a disproportional amount of officers, including their Tactical Aid Unit, to police a non-violent protest. However, despite the peacefulness of the protesters, they have been treated like criminals by the GMP with people being pushed, threatened, intimidated, and some even being assaulted and subsequently hospitalized.
On March 17th, a female protester named Vanda was pulled from the protest lines and brutally assaulted before being arrested. This incident where she was pinned down, dragged along the ground, and pressed against a fence by multiple officers is a disgraceful act carried out by those entrusted by the public to serve and protect. This incident is unfortunately not unique and in fact, this same woman was assaulted before by police and subsequently cornered and threatened by the same officers.
This has to stop. People have the right to peacefully protest against a process that has been shown to be environmentally damaging and a risk to people's water supplies and also to air quality. We must call on Tony Lloyd, Greater Manchester's Police and Crime Commissioner, to end over-policing of Barton Moss and the associated brutality that has been inflicted on the protesters for months.
