Nic T.
started this petition to
West Vancouver District Mayor and Council
Unlike other municipalities, West Vancouver has no bylaws to protect mature and healthy trees on private land. Lots of construction and lot-filling homes, as well as random tree removal by homeowners is leading to a staggering loss of mature trees.

In 2014, 154 single dwellings were built and many trees were lost and not replaced (assuming 1.5 mature trees were cut, this is a total of 231 trees).

This petition to West Vancouver District Mayor and Council asks them to take action to save our trees and keep our neighbourhood green. Our recommendations to Council include:

  • Formally acknowledge that the loss of mature trees is a long-standing issue for most residents (see "Site, Form & Character" West Vancouver Housing Study, October 2013, pages 23, 24)
  • In the next 12 months, implement innovative and reasonable (win – win) measures to protect healthy and mature trees on private land, and replace those that are lost to construction or removal. This should be included in a new bylaw (the District of North Vancouver protects trees that have trunks that 75 centimeters in diameter measured 1 meter from the ground)
  • In the next 12 months, formulate and implement a plan that significantly increases the number of trees planted on boulevards
We need to show Council there is strong support by West Vancouver residents. Sign this and send it to your friends.
