Assam: Stop tea with tyranny

To Shri Chandra Mohan Patowary, Commerce and Industries Minister of Assam, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, Chief Minister of Assam and CEOs of major tea companies:

We urge you to ensure that the National Register of Citizens (NRC) is not made public and call for an end to the racist policies behind the “citizenship” drive. As Minister for Industries, and leading tea brands, we ask you to use your considerable influence to speak out to end arbitrary detentions and stop people going stateless.

Assam: Stop tea with tyranny
Snatched from home, ripped apart from family, stripped of citizenship, marched off to prison camps… It’s unbelievable but this will be the fate of millions of Muslims in a remote corner of India – unless we act fast…. Through our morning cup of tea!

This massive abuse is happening in Assam – known worldwide for its fine tea. It exports 40% and every major tea brand sources from there.

If we hit the government and global tea labels with the threat of a boycott until this racist policy is withdrawn, we can hurt their image and bottom line. Assam’s tea industry already faces massive challenges from climate change and competition. They simply can’t afford their tea being associated with tyranny!
