Steps for reaching out:
Get to know the person you’re reaching out to by reading the introduction and talking points on the right.
Pick up the phone, or hit the e-mail button, and reach out!
Introduce yourself first: What’s your name, where do you live, why are you reaching out?
Make your point: Why do you hope Julian Hill will support the adoption of a Global Magnitsky Act in Australia?
Offer hope, inspiration, and encouragement -- angry demands usually don’t work.
Mr Hill is a young and progressive politician born and raised in Melbourne. He has a strong voting record on human rights issues. Upon returning from a self-funded trip to witness Cambodia's Dictatorial regime, Mr Hill said last year “Australia and the world made a promise to the Cambodian people, to stand up for human rights, peace and democracy. But 28 years on, the world has failed to keep its promise” He also called for “visa bans and asset freezes for senior members of this odious regime.”
Mr Hill is a member of the Human Rights Sub-Committee, leading the inquiry into whether Australia should adopt its own version of a Global Magnitsky Act. If this Committee recommends to Parliament that it should adopt such a law, the chances of it succeeding become much stronger!
Connecting with Mr Hill on this issue:
The Global Magnitsky Act is a valuable tool in combating human rights abuses and gross corruption across the globe.
As a member of the Human Rights Sub-Committee, we need Mr. Hill to once again call for visa bans and asset freezes, this time for human rights abusers across the world -- by taking a stance in favour of an Australian Magnitsky Act.
Australia cannot allow human rights abusers and money launderers to abuse Australia as a safe haven; not as a tourist destination, nor to hide their dirty money.
Adopting the Global Magnitsky Act helps Australia to uphold its commitment to the rule of law and protect all Australians.
