Steps for reaching out:
Get to know the person you’re reaching out to by reading the introduction and talking points on the right.
Pick up the phone, or hit the e-mail button, and reach out!
Introduce yourself first: What’s your name, where do you live, why are you reaching out?
Make your point: Why do you hope Peter Khalil will support the adoption of a Global Magnitsky Act in Australia?
Offer hope, inspiration, and encouragement -- angry demands usually don’t work.
Mr Khalil was first elected in 2016 and is the child of immigrant parents from Egypt. Previous to his time in Parliament, he worked as a foreign policy and national security adviser to the Federal Government. He also served the Department of Defence in Iraq and was awarded the Australian Overseas Humanitarian Services Medal.
Taking his passions of multiculturalism and human rights into the Parliament, he has spoken out on various human rights issues. He recently called for Australian lawmakers to take action against the forced labour of the Uyghur people in China, by taking action similar to that of the US Congress.
Mr Khalil is a member of the Human Rights Sub-Committee, leading the inquiry into whether Australia should adopt its own version of a Global Magnitsky Act. If this Committee recommends to Parliament that it should adopt such a law, the chances of it succeeding become much stronger!
Mr Khalil lives with his wife and two young children in Pascoe Vale.
Connecting with Mr Khalil on this issue:
We need you, Mr Khalil, to again stand up for the rights of Uyghur people in China, by taking a firm stance in favor of an Australian Magnitsky legislation.
The Global Magnitsky Act is a valuable tool in combating human rights abuses and gross corruption across the globe.
Australia cannot allow human rights abusers and money launderers to abuse Australia as a safe haven; not as a tourist destination, nor to hide their dirty money.
Adopting the Global Magnitsky Act helps Australia to uphold its commitment to the rule of law and protect all Australians.
