A genocide we can stop
To President Obama and Members of the UN Security Council:
We call on you to impose a strong package of sanctions - including asset freezes and travel bans - on all government and rebel leaders stoking the violence in South Sudan, and to authorize a regional peacekeeping force with the goal of enabling full humanitarian access to affected areas.

Two men are to blame: President Salva Kiir and his former deputy Riek Machar. Locked in a bitter power struggle, both are cynically stoking tensions between their two previously peacefully co-existing tribes. Both men have assets abroad that can be frozen. If we hit Kiir and Machar where it hurts - their wallets - we can still stop this nightmare from becoming a genocide.
The US has already showed its willing to punish individuals and is thinking of taking this to the UN Security Council. China doesn’t want to see this oil-rich nation slide into chaos either. So it’s winnable -- but we have to act fast. Let’s give Obama the boost he needs to persuade the UN Security Council to impose tough sanctions now. Sign here and when we reach 1 million we’ll deliver our message directly to Samantha Power, Obama’s ambassador to the UN.
