Hussein Julood’s 21-year-old son Ali died because of toxic gas flaring on BP oil fields in Iraq. Gas flaring releases cancer-causing fumes like benzene that trigger a slow, painful death for innocent people, and it emits tonnes of methane, heating up our planet.

In 2015, 21 young Americans filed a constitutional climate lawsuit – Juliana v. United States – against the U.S. government, which they claim is violating their rights by fueling the climate emergency. Our movement has backed them financially and is providing campaigning expertise.

In our submission and at the hearing in Brazil, we told the judges how climate anxiety among young people is ravaging their mental health, and therefore violating their human rights; and how Indigenous communities’ rights must be front and centre in the biggest environmental challenge of our time.

Now Mr. Julood is channelling his grief into trying to get justice for his son by suing BP if they don’t stop gas flaring and pay reparations.
6 Portuguese kids v. 32 European governments
On 27 September 2023, they got their day in court to try to protect their fundamental human rights – and their lives – from lethal climate threats. On 9 April 2024, their case was unfortunately ruled inadmissible, but this does not mark the end of their journey — stay tuned!
