Stop the dog massacre!

To Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, President of the Republic of Türkiye:

We are deeply shocked by the new law that allows mass euthanasia of dogs in Turkey. A country's image is strongly linked to how it treats its animals and Turkey was often cited as an example for its humane policy of sterilization and vaccination of stray animals. We ask you to remain true to these values and to renounce these cruel measures that are ineffective and contrary to the recommendations of experts and the United Nations.

People have already started the killing. Dogs, old and young, are being captured in the streets of Turkey to have their necks broken or to be suffocated in plastic bags.

And it's about to get worse. 4 millions of stray dogs could be killed in this torturous way under a new law that's about to take force.

This has provoked mass demonstrations, and local experts say we can still force the government to back down. Parliament will vote as early as next week whether to implement the new law.

Without a majority, the law won’t go into effect. So, let's raise our voices for the animals that can’t speak for themselves, and bring a wave of global pressure on the Turkish Parliament to find a more respectful and effective way to deal with the stray dog issue.
