To the representatives of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and the creators, cast, and distributors of Emilia Pérez:

As citizens of the world, we call for a public apology to the victims of human rights violations, particularly the families of the disappeared, who continue their relentless search for their loved ones. We also urge that all profits from this film be donated to search collectives for the disappeared in Mexico. Real tragedies are not entertainment

More information:

Hollywood is celebrating a film that turns one of the greatest tragedies of our time—forced disappearances in Mexico—into entertainment. Families searching for their loved ones are outraged, but if we act together, we can take their voices all the way to the Oscars red carpet.

This is Emilia Pérez, a musical that tells the story of a drug lord who, after undergoing gender reassignment surgery, leaves crime behind and becomes a leader in the fight for the disappeared, even reaching the status of a saint.

More than 120,000 people have disappeared in Mexico, and the number keeps rising every day. Their families never stop searching—digging with their own hands for bones, demanding justice from a system that ignores them. But instead of amplifying their struggle, Emilia Pérez turns their tragedy into a shallow fiction.

Add your name and demand that the creators of Emilia Pérez apologise to the victims, donate the film’s profits to Search Brigades for the Disappeared, and that the Academy stops rewarding films that trivialise real suffering. Once we are thousands, we will take this call to the media and the Oscars ceremony. Time is running out—we have three weeks. Sign now and share.
