My name is Thaer Ahmad. I'm an emergency room physician who volunteered in Gaza.
I want to tell you about my friend, colleague and hero, Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya— a paediatrician who led one of the last functioning hospitals in northern Gaza.
As bombs fell around Palestinian babies and terrified families flooded the wards, Dr. Hussam never stopped caring for his patients. Even after he was wounded, even after his son, Ibrahim, was killed in an Israeli airstrike at the entrance of a hospital, Dr. Hussam never left his post at the hospital.
Now, Dr. Hussam and nearly 100 other Palestinian healthcare workers remain in Israeli detention without charge. His detention has just been extended for another six months.
