As concerned citizens from across the world, we strongly urge you to reject the catastrophic amendments to the personal status law which would allow religious clerics to govern marriage contracts. If Iraq does this, it will be a shameful measure which pushes the country several steps backwards. We call on you to stand on the right side of history and work towards greater protection and rights for women -- not less.

Iraq might change its constitution to allow children as young as NINE YEARS OLD to be married.

This is a nightmare for little girls and an attack on the conscience. Imagine any nine-year-old you know, doing their homework, playing with their friends, learning about the world. It's deeply disturbing to think about them being married off to someone two, three, or even four times their age.

But the Iraqi government is more reliant on foreign aid and goodwill than almost any other in the world, giving a global outcry unique power to stop this. Add your name, and an Iraqi MP who opposes this law will deliver our voices directly inside parliament!
