Obama: don’t militarize the police

To US President Barack Obama:

We call on you to reject pressure calling for the renewed transfer of military equipment to local police. Weapons won’t help heal America -- dialogue, disarmament, and de-escalation training for police can start us down a new path to a safer future.

Obama: don’t militarize the police
America is bleeding from the recent tragedies. But some police are calling the violence a “war on cops” and they’re asking the President for military-grade equipment to fight it -- he could decide in days.

Last year President Obama limited the military gear police can use, and he just started us down a path of healing by bringing Black Lives Matter and law enforcement to the White House for a dialogue. But a major police organization is using this moment to press the President into giving them the equipment the military uses to fight wars.

The answer can’t be more weapons, it can’t be more violence. We need a dialogue and we need disarmament, and our voices could be the difference.

The President could decide next week. Let’s build a massive call for dialogue and disarmament now, and help give Obama the backing he needs to stand strong in the face of aggressive police lobbying. Avaaz will deliver our voices directly to the White House.
