Coca-Cola: Stop choking our oceans

To James Quincey, CEO of Coca-Cola:

Single-use plastics are devastating our oceans worldwide. As a producer of over 110 million plastic bottles a year, Coca-Cola has an opportunity to be a catalyst in transforming the industry’s impact on our oceans. We urge Coca-Cola to be a leader in reducing the use of single-use plastics by developing a comprehensive policy to address plastics in our oceans.

Dear friends,

This is not a false alarm. By 2050, scientists say there could be more plastic than fish in the ocean.

Every year at least 8 million tonnes of plastic are dumped into our oceans. Our addiction to plastic is killing over 100 million marine animals each year when they choke on and ingest plastics, causing massive infections and puncturing internal organs.

The biggest producers of plastics MUST take responsibility for trashing our oceans. And right now we have a huge opportunity: Coca-Cola, the largest global producer of soft drinks, is considering a new plastics policy. Coca-Cola makes over 110 billion plastic bottles a year, so a commitment from them to shift away from plastics could set an example for the entire industry.

Organisations like Greenpeace are ramping up pressure on Coca-Cola and our community can be the gamechanger! Let’s flood Coca-Cola with messages urging them to clean up our oceans - and then deliver them as a giant message in a bottle to Coca-Cola’s headquarters when we reach 1 million!
