Putin's secret prisoners

To Europe, the US and world leaders everywhere:

As citizens from across the world, we call on you to demand Russia release all Ukrainian civilians held in secret prisons. These thousands of people have no diplomatic pathway to freedom -- their names are hidden, their families left without answers. We urge you to impose targeted sanctions until every civilian is free.

Viktoria was just 23 when Russian forces abducted her from her hometown in Ukraine three years ago. Since then, her mother lives in constant fear, desperate for information about Viktoria.

Sixteen thousand Ukrainians are being held in brutal Russian prisons, perhaps many more. Systematic beatings, torture, and sexual assault have been reported by the UN. But, unlike war prisoners, those civilians’ names are kept secret by Russia and can’t expect to be released in the next prisoner exchange deals.

Viktoria and the others have fallen into a hole of silence.

That’s what we must change now, together: With 100,000 signatures, Avaaz will bring a new plea to free the Ukrainian civilians and demand European sanctions on Russia until all are released. And when we reach 500,000, we’ll make sure their stories make top media headlines, to raise international pressure ahead of the next peace talks in October.

We should never give up on human lives. Join us today and let’s win this!
